February 6th - 2013 Regular Legislative Session Day 24

We’re hearing four bills in the Government Operations and Elections Committee today. House Bill 1267 which allows a person to participate in an election by registering to vote online eight days before the election or in person at the county auditor's office up to 5 p.m. on the day of the election. Once again, the Democrat majority in Olympia is pushing same day registration and voting.

House Bill 1279 allows 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote when applying for a driver's license or identicard. This is vertically the same bill the Democrat majority passed out of the House last year which contained a lot of technical problems and this bill fails to address any of those issues.

House Bill 1319 recognizes March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day and requires that the National League of Families' POW/MIA flag be flown by public entities on that date. At the conclusion of the testimony, I made a motion to suspend the rules and immediately move the bill out of committee with a"do pass” recommendation. The committee accepted my motion and passed the bill out of committee. To the Vietnam Veterans in our communities, thank you for your service and welcome home.

House Bill 1359 establishes professional qualifications for the state archivist and expands the explicit duties and responsibilities of the state archivist.
