Oh no, here we go again ...

Yakima Herald-Republic: hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/W/WA_XGR_BUDGET_WAOL...FAULT

Anytime you hear the word compromise, run away as fast as you can. All we have to do is look at the following quote from the article ..."Republican Sen. Michael Baumgartner said his colleagues still want to see the pension changes and other overhauls, but he said the party was flexible and open to accepting other ideas as part of a larger compromise, including the possibility of higher taxes.

"I think we can get a bipartisan coalition for that," Baumgartner.”

Keep in mind, this is the same Sen. Baumgartner that is running for US Senate. He must be talking about the Senate being"flexible and open” to"the possibility of higher taxes” because I can assure him, there are quite a few of us in the House who are not.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 16

Since nothing is happening in Olympia, it's time for another Founder's Quote ...

"Men must be ready, they must pride themselves and be happy to sacrifice their private pleasures, passions and interests, nay, their private friendships and dearest connections, when they stand in competition with the rights of society." --John Adams, letter to Mercy Warren, 1776

2012 First Special Session Day 8 Continued ...

I just received word that all Floor Sessions this week will be Pro Forma, subject to change. So now the earliest we'll get back to work is likely Day 22 of the Special Session.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 15

We still don't know a whole lot from Olympia. It sounds like the 5 Corners are still meeting to negotiate the Supplemental Budget, but there's nothing firm coming out of it yet. Today was Pro Foruma and we're adjourned until Wednesday at 9:55 AM which suggests that will be another Pro Foruma day. I hope for the sake of Washington, something happens soon.

State officials eye accounting change to fix budget | Yakima Herald-Republic: www.yakima-herald.com/stories/2012/03/22/state-off...udget

We don't need new or additional one-time gimmicks, we need real reform. Come on, let's end the business as usual mentality and get to work.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 9

Still not much to report from Olympia. I was told the budget negotiators met for about 45 minutes yesterday ... not good news for a solution anytime soon.

In lieu of news from Olympia, how about a Founder's Quote ...

"The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time; the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them." --Thomas Jefferson, Rights of British America, 1774

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 8 Continued

I just received word that the House is adjourned until Wednesday morning at 9:55 AM. Generally speaking, anytime the House meets at 9:55 AM it will be Pro Forma ... which means, no Floor Action. At what point will the citizens of Washington State wake up and realize 12 years of one party control has devastated the state? Does anyone realize that the House Democrat's solution to the budget deficit is to delay payments to school districts by one day, thus creating an even larger deficit next biennium? That’s no solution, that failure of leadership.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 8

Well it's Day 8 of the First Special Session and I'm still in Moxee waiting for the call back. It's frustrating to sit here each morning, waiting to see if I get an email calling me back. It makes it tough to get much started, knowing I could be called away anytime.

Since there's nothing new to report from Olympia, I thought I'd share a Founder's quote this morning ...

"Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall, when the wise are banished from the public councils, because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded, because they flatter the people, in order to betray them." --Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution, 1833

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 5

I just got word that there will be no Floor Action on Monday, so I don't have to go back to Olympia Sunday night. There are a lot of things going on over there right now that do not bode well for a quick and easy resolution to the Supllemental Budget. Yesterday, the Senate Republicans and the three Democrats that voted with them had a Press Conference to announce their latest budget proposal. The Governor was not happy at all and promptly cancelled several bill signings. She then cancelled several more today, but only House Bills. Let me see if I have this right Governor, you're mad at the Senate, but you're only going to sign Senate bills? Hmmm, interesting.

This could be a year of several Special Sessions.

Paul Ann Romeo

My Aunt's Memorial service was very well attended and as hard as it was for me personally, it was a great reminder as to all the people she touched during her life. A friend of mine sent me a message last week that really illustrated what she did for people ..."Paula was a savior for me as a player and coach at CWU.” She was an amazing women, a wonderful Aunt and truly a great person.

Thank you everyone who attended her Memorial Service. Words cannot describe to happiness you brought to my family and I today. God bless you all.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 4

Today is my Aunt's Memorial Service. It's going to be a very tough day. It's difficult because I miss her so much, yet I know she's in a better place, free of her cancer and free of her pain. God has a plan for each of us, the question is are each of us willing to accept His plan and follow His path.

One of the things about being in the Legislature is having to get used to being home. It can be a tough transition at times, but it's a lot easier with Molly in my life. We had some great conversations the last few days and she is sure making my transition easier. I love you Molly.

I got news today that there will be no Floor Action this week and I don't need to go back to Olympia yet. Could be good news or bad ... we'll see. I'm sure glad to be home. There a lot to do and a lot to work on, but with God as my co-pilot, anything is possible. :-)

My Aunt Paula's Memorial Service is this Thursday at 11:00 AM in Ellensburg at St. Andrews Church. I missing that lady something fierce.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Sine Die cont.

We're on the House Floor debating the Senate's Operating Budget. We just proposed an amendment to not delay payments to public schools. The amendment failed 55-43 with only one Democrat voting with us. We’re debating a few more amendments and then on to debate on final passage.

The Democrats are banking on a delayed payment to public schools, which actually pushes the payment into a completely different biennium. I just finished my comments on the Supplemental Budget and immediately got a text from a friend back home telling me I did a good job with my comments.

There it is, the bipartisan vote here tonight was a no vote on the Supplemental Budget.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 60 Sine Die

It’s Sine Die, the last day of the 2012 Regular Session. There’s still a slim chance of leaving this place on time and without a Special Session. A very slim chance. The Democrat Majority added 19 bills to the"Green Sheet” or Floor Calendar for today. I don’t know if they think they’ll run all of them, but there’s a chance they will try and roll right over us.

I’m looking forward to getting back to"God’s Country” sometime very soon. I’ve got a lot of things to do and work through when I get home, but at least I’ll be in a good place to do that.

So far I haven’t received an update on my Aunt, so please keep her in your prayers today.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 59 Continued

We're going on 3 hours and 15minutes without any action on the House Floor. The Democrat Majoirty is trying to find a way to put all the blame on the Senate Republicans for having a Special Session.

Oh the fun of Olympia near Sine Die.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 59

Things have slowed to a snail’s pace in Olympia. We have a total of 6 bills on the"Concurrence/Dispute” Calendar and 5 on the"Green” Sheet. Only 11 total bills to run in two days, yet we’re headed to Special Session. Can anyone say"Lack of Leadership”? Look where 12 years of one party control has gotten us. Ugh!

My dad called this morning and told me my aunt made it through the night. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 58

I received word my aunt was not doing well, so I drove to Ellensburg to see her last night. Those of you who know my Aunt Paula, knows how wonderful she is and how important she is in my life. It’s tough seeing her right now, but I thank God I was able to see her and say goodbye. Please pray for her.

I drove back to Olympia last night in a massive snow storm. It was not a fun drive, but at least the irrigation outlook keeps getting better with each storm.

We’re back on the House Floor this morning to run a few bills on the"Concurrence/Dispute” Calendar and several bills on the"Green” Sheet. It sounds like it will be another early day, which means a Special Session is more and more likely. This has been a very difficult session for me personally. Please know that your thoughts and prayers have kept me strong and given me the courage to stand strong.

Speaker Chopp and Governor Gregoire's comments on the Senate GOP takeover

If reactions by House Speaker Frank Chopp and Gov. Chris Gregoire to Friday's events are any guide, the Legislature will be in town far beyond the scheduled March 8 adjournment day.

"The Senate Republicans have exercised the worst abuse of power I have ever witnessed in the Legislature," Chopp, D-Seattle, said in a statement. "It says something about them that the minute they gained power, they abused it."

Gregoire, standing outside the speaker's office, was furious as well.

"I am chagrined that they're over there right now working on something I've never seen, the members have never seen — members on both parties have never seen, and they're going to take a vote tonight?" she said.

"This is not how we do business in Washington state."

Actually this is exactly what the Republican Minority has been dealing with for 12 years.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 55

Ok folks, someone please send me the results from the GOP Caucus’s back in the Yakima area, please. We’re back on the House Floor this afternoon to run 5 bills on the"Green Sheet” and a whole bunch of bills on the"Concurrence/Dispute” Calendar.

If you haven’t already heard, the Senate Republicans took over the Senate last night and kicked some serious butt. The passed out a true bi-partisan budget that did not cut Levy Equalization, did not rely on the 25th Month payments and did not include tax increases. If you have a Republican Senator or if your Senator is Senator Tom, Kastama or Sheldon, please contact them and thank them for doing what’s right for Washington State.

It’s going to me a long day with a lot of sitting around waiting for the Democrat Majority to decide what they want to do. They’re a little edgy after the meltdown in the Senate last night. Hehehe ... I love it.

One last thought, I met a truly great man yesterday ... Thank you Pastor Scott for your words of encouragement.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 54

Five o’clock today is the cutoff for bills from the other House, meaning it’s the cutoff for all Senate Bills in the House of Representatives ... unless the bill is deemed NTIB (necessary to implement the budget). We should have a somewhat early night today and then I expect a very long day tomorrow. We started the"concur/ do not concur” process today too. This is the process by which the two Houses of the Legislature agree or disagree with the amendments that were made to a bill. It’s a process that takes quite a while to complete and is extremely slow.

We’ve run seven bills so far today and just broke for lunch until 12:30. It’s going to be a long, slow day that ends early ... only in Olympia. Only 7 days left.
