2011 Legislative Session

Day 19-22 - I was able to head home this weekend ... yeah. The Yakima Association of Realtors and Yakima County Cattlemen dinner were excellent. Things are going so what well in Olympia, but I expect things to get weird by weeks end. If you look up "Olympia" in the dictionary, I think you'll find "organized chaos and mayhem". Things are really weird right now.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 18 - There are a lot of issues starting to heat up here in Olympia. The deadline to move bills out of committee is Feb. 17th, which means there are only 21 days left. I'm headed home this weekend for the Yakima Association of Realtor's Installation Banquet on Friday and the Yakima County Cattlemen's Annual Dinner on Saturday. Tiffany has a volleyball tournament on Sunday too. Toss in moving a few cows to different pastures and getting a load of hay from where it's being stored and you have a very, very busy weekend.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 17 - Well, more of the same here in Olympia. Lots of committee meetings and very little action. It sounds like issues might heat up next week, but we'll see.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 16 - There's still not a lot going on in Olympia. Although we all have several committee meetings each day, there's not a lot of legislation moving out of committees. I've seen the Governor's agency consolidation plan three different times, in three different committees. Signs are pointing to a long, long session.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 15: Today we had our first real floor session where we debated the "Not so Early, Reaction" bill. The Democrats voted down our proposed striker and the bill passed on a party line vote. I'm still trying to figure out how making a retroactive cut to the K-4 Enhancement funding makes any sense. Seriously, the Democrats are going to tell the school districts "oops, sorry. Now send back the money we sent you in July"?

2011 Legislative Session

Days 12-14: On Friday my 1:30 Committee meeting was canceled so I was able to leave early and surprise Molly. Spent the weekend working around the place. We attempted to get some hay hauled ... I say attempted because it never goes the way it's supposed to. This time, the mud sucked a tire off the rim. I got back to Olympia around 4:30 on Sunday. Today (Day 15), is going to be a big day on the House Floor. The "Not so Early, Bad Action" bill will be debated. We've got a striker that protects K-4 Enhancement funding and cuts an additional $30 million from the General Fund. It should be a wild one.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 11: So far, this session has been pretty weird. There hasn't been a lot of action or a lot of bills, but there's a crazy vibe to it. I'm headed home this weekend (yea) and I'm really looking forward to it.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 10: Today held more of the same ... committee, caucus and committee, with a few other meetings sprinkled in for good measure. A bunch of our local Realtors are in town today and tomorrow ... it's nice to see some folks from back home. We received word we'll be debating the Temporary Cuts Bill (aka Early Action Bill) on Monday. By the looks of things, the Democrats will propose a retroactive cut to K-4 Enhancement funding. I'll get more information on Friday.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 9 - More Committee meetings, more constituent meetings and more crazy thoughts from the Democrats. The proposed 2nd Early Action (they don't call it a supplemental budget anymore) Bill is out and it just kicks the can a little further down the road. There's nothing of substance to it. Tomorrow will be more of the same, but it sounds like we'll be debating the supplemental budget ... I mean the 2nd early action bill on Friday.

2011Legislative Session

Day 8 - Today was a long day, although not that busy. Molly and Tiffany left this afternoon, which could be the problem. I'm working with Rep. Charles Ross (14th District) on some really great ideas for legislation. If you don't know Charles, I would suggest meeting him. He's a good friend and great Legislator. I got word several of my bills will receive a hearing over the next couple of weeks.

Tuesday will be another busy day with 3 different Committee Hearings, but that should help make the day go quickly. Newly elected Rep. Overstreet is a good guy and is really solid on conservative issues. Newly elected Reps Zeiger and Dahlquist did great jobs with their floor speeches today.

2011 Legislative Session

Days 6 and 7 - We don't have any Committee meetings, hearing or floor sessions this weekend. Molly and Tiffany are coming over this morning for the weekend ... yea! Rep. Ross and I are working on a B-I-G huge issue right now, which I am researching right now.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 5 - After 2+ sessions it still amazes me how little gets done in Olympia until the last few days. Pay attention to the next couple of weeks, there should be some great bills dropped that will cause the "other side" to lose the minds.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 4 - Another day, another set of meetings. So far, the session has been very low key. The Committees I sit on have been focused on work sessions and not legislation ... not necessarily a bad thing. Issues should heat up next week, but we'll see.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 3 - It was a busy, but remarkably productive day. I finalized a couple of more bills for introduction and met with a lot of different people. Three more Committee meetings, the first at 8:00 AM and the last ending at 8:00 PM, and the State of the Judiciary made for a long day. We'll start getting into the meat of issues next week.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 2 - Another busy day. The Governor gave her State of the State address today. She hit on a lot of Republican talking points and sounded like she will be willing to consider our ideas this year. The proof will come later this session, so we'll see. Tomorrow ... more meetings! I've got several bills introduced and am waiting for hearing dates.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 1: It was a busy day in Olympia, although not much happened. I had several meetings in the morning. Then the ceremonial opening day, which including being sworn into office. The State Government Tribal Affairs Committee met for a couple of hours and then a few more meetings.

Post from davidtaylor at CHUM.LY

Greetings friends. It's been a while since I last posted ... my apologies, but times are busy. I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year celebration. As you probably know, I'll be headed out Saturday or Sunday for the 2011 Legislative Session. Yesterday (Monday) we received our committee assignments and I will be serving on the Environmental (formerly Ecology and Parks) Committee, the Labor and Workforce Development (formerly portions of the Commerce and Labor) Committee and General Government Appropriations and Oversight Committee. I will also be serving as the Ranking Republican on the State Government and Tribal Affairs Committee, which I am very excited about.

Once the 2011 Session begins, I'll do my best to post a daily summaries of whats happening in Olympia. It looks like it will be a long and difficult session, but I believe we have an opportunity to change the way government operates and return to the Priorities of Government.
