Less Government, Lower Taxes and More Freedom -

It’s Friday of Committee Assembly Week and I’m really looking forward to getting home. The first meeting of the day was Government Operations and Elections where we’re hearing comments on the Advisory Votes, Help America Vote Act and Public Records Requests.

Later today I’ve got a Local Government Committee where we’re being updated on Department of Ecology rulemaking, Public Records Requests, State Building Code Council, Voluntary Stewardship Programs, and a summary of the Growth Management Act review that occurred over the summer.

After a long week in Olympia, I’m ready to get home to my family. I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

Less Government, Lower Taxes and More Freedom -

It’s Wednesday in Olympia and I have several meetings today. Yesterday’s meeting of the Joint Administrative Rules Review Committee was very interesting. The purpose of the committee is to hear citizen petitions alleging an agency rule exceeds statutory authority. In addition to what would be a typical consistency issue, the Committee also has jurisdiction to consider the adequacy of an agency’s small business economic impact statement. This is a new committee for me and it only meets during the interim.

June 5th - 2013 First Special Legislative Session

Well I'm back in Olympia today for an Appropriations Committee Meeting to hear a couple of bills and to possibly take Executive Action on at least one. We're also scheduled to be on the House Floor tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday. It doesn’t sound like any real progress has been made on the budget, but there are several bills NTIB (necessary to implement the budget) on the calendar.

February 4th - 2013 Regular Legislative Session Day 22

I had a great weekend; it just wasn’t long enough. Molly and I were able to get a lot of errands done on Saturday and spent Sunday in Selah watching Tiffany play volleyball. The four-wheeler wasn’t running properly, so I worked on it Saturday afternoon and the guy I’ve got feeding for me was able to finish fixing it on Sunday. All in all, it was a productive weekend.

I started my Monday morning taping a radio segment with Reps Matt Shea and Jason Overstreet. We discussed reducing taxes, indefinite detention and unmanned aerial vehicles … just another episode expounding the virtues of freedom and liberty.

We have a Floor Session scheduled for 10:00 AM this morning and then I have a series of meeting leading up to my 3:30 Appropriation Committee meeting. Just another day in Olympia.

January 28th - 2013 Regular Legislative Session Day 15

What an incredible weekend. There were approximately 170 people at the RLC kick-off in Yakima on Saturday. I had the privilege of speaking and we recorded a Freedomcast episode at the event.


It was great meeting so many wonderful people from all over the state. We also attended the Yakima County Cattlemen’s Annual Western Party. They had a huge turnout and it was great seeing so many friends. I was able to spend Sunday with family and friends before heading back to Olympia. God is great!

It’s been a busy morning so far. I started the day recording a radio show with Reps Matt Shea and Jason Overstreet and then spent the next 45 minutes trying to find my wallet that turned out was on the floor at the house I stay out. We had Caucus this morning as well and now I’m reviewing draft legislation in my office. It was must be Monday.

January 25th - 2013 Regular Legislative Session Day 12

Today has been a fairly easy day in Olympia ... Floor Session and a caucus meeting thus far, followed by two meetings with constituents and the Local Government Committee meeting at 1:30. After a really long week in Olympia, I'm looking forward to being home this weekend.

I’ll be speaking tomorrow at the Republican Liberty Caucus event in Yakima and attending the Yakima County Cattlemen’s Annual dinner tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone.

The 2nd Amendment Rally was awesome and really well attended. Here's my speech ...

Good afternoon and welcome to your state capitol. Ladies and gentlemen, we are facing dark times and now is the time for each and every one of us to stand strong to uphold the Constitution of the United States. The tragedies in Colorado, Oregon and Connecticut, and make no mistake these were major tragedies, were perpetrated by bad people, bent on harming good people. Guns don’t harm people, people harm people and no amount of gun laws, gun bans or gun registration will ever stop individuals wishing to harm others. We cannot allow government to use these tragedies to infringe upon our 2nd Amendment rights to keep and bear arms.

In the Declaration of Independence, our Founding Fathers declared that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights. There are two very important points in the Declaration. First, our Founding Fathers acknowledged that these rights came from God, not the Government. Government did not grant these rights and they certainly cannot take them away.

Second, the Founders used the word"unalienable” which means, not to be separated, given away, or taken away. The right to keep and bear arms is not a suggestion. It is not qualified with"unless the government says otherwise.” It is very clear, we have the God given, unalienable right to keep and bear arms.

We have already seen actions that threaten our 2nd Amendment rights and in the coming days and weeks, we will see proposals at the National and State level that will continue the assault on these rights. We all must be ready and stand in support of our rights, we must educate our friends and neighbors when these threats arise and we all must be willing to speak loudly in defense of our rights.

In the next few days, we will be introducing legislation that protects our 2nd Amendment Rights. The Firearms Freedom Act includes a provision declaring"any federal law, rule, regulation, or order attempting to ban or register semi-automatic firearms or any firearm magazine unenforceable in Washington State.

Folks, join me today in telling the government this is our line in the sand and that we will not go quietly into the night.
Join me in telling the government"you will not tread on me.”

It's Saturday and there are no Legislative Committee meetings today. I'll be speaking at the 2nd Amendment Rally at the Capitol this afternoon and have already heard from several folks who made the drive from Yakima to be there. I'm looking forward to seeing eveyone.

Molly made it over last night ... it was great seeing her. Although I have some work to do this weekend, it's going to be really nice spending the weekend with Molly.

January 18th - 2013 Regular Legislative Session Day 5

The first week of the 2013 Washington Legislative Session is almost over and I’m looking forward to the weekend. Although I have a lot of work to do and will be working tomorrow, I do get to see Molly. I’ll be speaking at the 2nd Amendment Rally here in Olympia Saturday afternoon as well. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

I’m headed over the House Floor for Caucus and possible Floor action. I don’t expect there to be a lot of excitement today, but if something breaks I’ll be sure to post it here. The Local Government Committee is holding a Growth Management Workshop today at 1:30 in House Hearing Room D. This past week we had Committee Assembly in Olympia. I still haven’t figured out the purpose of bringing everyone to Olympia for Committee meetings immediately following an election, especially considering some of us won’t be serving on the same committees in January. I currently serve on four committees, but two of those committees were recently reorganized as part of several other committees and in 2013 won’t exist in form or function. It doesn’t make any sense, but it’s Olympia and it’s not meant to make sense.

I was able to work on several pieces of possible legislation over the past several days and hope to have some language finalized over the next couple of weeks. We’re currently working on language for bills related to elections, property rights and taxation, among others. We’ll be posting links to the legislation, once completed … stay tuned.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 26 Continued

After sitting on the House Floor for over three hours, the Democrat Majority has decided to run one bill and break for lunch. So much for running five bills and going home for Easter. Frustration is best defined as working under a one party, Democrat majority control in Olympia. The latest idea for funding education is to create a task-force to determine how to fund education. It reminds me of an old cartoon ... Bored? Have a meeting!

I got news today that there will be no Floor Action this week and I don't need to go back to Olympia yet. Could be good news or bad ... we'll see. I'm sure glad to be home. There a lot to do and a lot to work on, but with God as my co-pilot, anything is possible. :-)

My Aunt Paula's Memorial Service is this Thursday at 11:00 AM in Ellensburg at St. Andrews Church. I missing that lady something fierce.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 51

So how do you know when the end of session is near? The introduction of Title only bills. Yes that’s right, one of the favorites of the Democrat Majority is to introduce a bill titled something like ... An Act related to increasing state revenue ... and that is the extent of the bill. Look at HB 2809 and 2810 to see two great examples.

Based on the schedule for this week, I think it’s safe to say the grind is about to begin. This is the time of session when we sit around and do a whole lot of waiting on the Democrats to count votes, trade votes and otherwise spin in circles trying to figure out what they want to do next. If it wasn’t so dang frustrating it would be entertaining.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 50

I had a fairly good weekend in Olympia. I started reading The Love Dare and The Resolution on Sunday, both are great books thus far and a real eye opener for my many short-comings. I went and watched Act of Valor last night ... holy cow, great movie. God bless the men and women protecting this great Nation.

We’re on the House Floor this afternoon. We don’t have any indication on how late we’re going to go tonight, so it could be a very long day. Stay tuned.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 40

Another day and more committee meetings ... My day started with an 8:00 AM Labor and Workforce Development Committee meeting. There are a couple of really bad bills on the agenda today like SB 6486 which grants collective bargaining rights for postdoctoral and clinical employees at UW and WSU ... god heavens, seriously? We need less not more collective bargaining in Washington State. At least there’s one good bill on the agenda, SB 6392 which expands a farm internship program.

We have a Floor Session scheduled this morning for Remembrance Day and we’ll probably have a brief caucus session. The House Republican Caucus is releasing its proposed budget today with a press conference at noon to give the details. Here are the highlights ... our budget maintains 100% of levy equalization, maintains the 180-day school year, maintains the current all-day kindergarten funding, funds education reform and accountability, and amounts to $580 million more education funding then the Governor’s proposed budget.

I also have an Environment Committee meeting at 1:30 this afternoon. The bills on the agenda include SB 5575 related to biomass energy facilities, SB 4343 related to anaerobic digester emissions, SB 6027 related to industrial wastewater facilities, and SB 6120 children’s safe products. The big stinker bill is SB 6120 which places very high standards on what is used to make children’s products ... it’s also known as the toxic toys bill.

Molly and Tiffany will be here tonight and then we’re going to the Great Wolf Lodge tomorrow with Charles and his family. I also want to thank everyone who’s wished me a happy birthday today.
