After spending several hours on the Floor today waiting to take action on House Bill 2088 and Senate Bill 5952 we finally got started. The debate on House Bill 2088 focused on the educational/training aspects of the bill and largely ignored the"permit streamlining” provisions that had been previously praised by the Governor. The fact of the matter is House Bill 2088 does absolutely nothing to streamline permitting in Washington State. We introduced House Bill 2090 yesterday that would streamline permitting for all business and property owners throughout Washington; unfortunately, the Governor doesn’t appear to be interested in actual solutions. TVW will have a recording on the debate available later today/tonight … be sure to watch the comments Representatives Shea, Overstreet and I made during the debate. House Bill 2088 passed 77 to 9 with 12 excused.

Debate on Senate Bill 5952, which is the companion bill to House Bill 2089, was all about the importance of creating a more business friendly tax structure in Washington. The fact this this bill doesn’t address the tax burden facing small business was even admitted; unfortunately, it didn’t stop the bill from moving forward. If reducing the tax burden on business is a good policy, and it is, why aren’t we doing it for all businesses? If lower taxation drives economic development and business expansion, and it does, why aren’t we doing it across the board and not limit it to one specific industry? {... Crickets ...} Kudos to Representative Jason Overstreet for hammering home the procedural problems associated with this bill. Senate Bill 5952 passed 75 to 11 with 12 excused.

We’re still waiting to hear whether we’re going to Sine Die the third Special Session or if they’ll keep it open to consider a gas tax increase later this month.

I hope everyone is paying attention ... the 2014 Legislative Session is shaping up to be all about taxes and gun control.

February 4th - 2013 Regular Legislative Session Day 22

I had a great weekend; it just wasn’t long enough. Molly and I were able to get a lot of errands done on Saturday and spent Sunday in Selah watching Tiffany play volleyball. The four-wheeler wasn’t running properly, so I worked on it Saturday afternoon and the guy I’ve got feeding for me was able to finish fixing it on Sunday. All in all, it was a productive weekend.

I started my Monday morning taping a radio segment with Reps Matt Shea and Jason Overstreet. We discussed reducing taxes, indefinite detention and unmanned aerial vehicles … just another episode expounding the virtues of freedom and liberty.

We have a Floor Session scheduled for 10:00 AM this morning and then I have a series of meeting leading up to my 3:30 Appropriation Committee meeting. Just another day in Olympia.

Anytime you hear the word compromise, run away as fast as you can. All we have to do is look at the following quote from the article ..."Republican Sen. Michael Baumgartner said his colleagues still want to see the pension changes and other overhauls, but he said the party was flexible and open to accepting other ideas as part of a larger compromise, including the possibility of higher taxes.

"I think we can get a bipartisan coalition for that," Baumgartner.”

Keep in mind, this is the same Sen. Baumgartner that is running for US Senate. He must be talking about the Senate being"flexible and open” to"the possibility of higher taxes” because I can assure him, there are quite a few of us in the House who are not.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 3

Today's Labor and Workforce Development Committee meeting is downright painful. We're having a work session today called "Income Inequality in Washington" also known as "Raise Taxes and Redistribute Wealth" work session. I'm sure glad we're spending 2 hours discussing this nonsense and not on the budget deficit we're facing. PAINFUL!

More meetings this afternoon and then off to dinner. My new Treasure, Christina, is headed over to Olympia today to attend a PDC Training tomorrow. Wednesday is steak night at the Brick!

Here's yet another great idea from the Democrats in Olympia. Let's increase property taxes by $1.0 billion to pay for education. This of course is on the heals of another $500 million sales tax increase to fund education. Hmm over the past 3 months, the Democrat majority in Olympia has proposed $1.5 billion in tax increase, but nothing in the way of government reform and reduced spending.

I have a novel idea, let's prioritize our spending and fund the core government functions first!

Two weeks from tomorrow, I head back to Olympia for the 2012 Regular Session. From what we're hearing, the $500 million sales tax increase may still be sitting on the horizon and there may be a proposed $1.0 billion property tax increase. Remember what Albert Einstein said? "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." It would appear the Democrat Majority doesn't remember?

The rest of the week will be fairly slow going, which I'm thankful for. We still need to mend a fence the US Army won't fix and may get that done Friday or Saturday. Otherwise, it's feeding cattle and horses and relaxing just a little bit. We're headed to Ellensburg on Sunday for Christmas with my family and then I'm taking Brock home on Monday. I've got a couple of meeting in Olympia on Tuesday and then back to Moxee for the remainder of the year.

The weather finally cleared up and now it's just cold. The yearlings are doing fantastic and having some great horn growth right now. We ended up separating the calf pen into three separate pens to keep the smallest ones healthy ... best thing we've done for far this winter. This years filly is getting really big. She's got great confirmation, now we just need her to finish coloring out.

Headed to town in a bit to pick up pigs at the butcher, go to the bank, get propane, and finish Christmas shopping. I'm pretty proud of myself for getting my shopping done before the 24th.
