Less Government, Lower Taxes and More Freedom -

2014 Legislative Session - T-minus 6 days

As we head into the 2014 Legislative Session and I prepare to head to Olympia later this week, I am thinking about the various bills we are likely to see. The rumor on the street is there won’t be much, if any, supplemental budget, which means 2014 could be a huge policy year with deferred implementation until 2015. As expected, there are already good bills and bad ones.

Among the good bills, there’s HB 2133 to maintain the privacy of student educational records which has already has a hearing scheduled, the 4th Amendment Protection Act to address warrantless surveillance and data collection and a few new regulatory reform bills to help promote economic development. On the other hand, it looks like both"firearms” initiatives to the Legislature have the requisite number of signatures for consideration and there’s HB 2124 related Continuity of Government (COG). We’re also hearing there are possibly bills allowing for random sobriety checkpoints and DNA collection upon arrest.

I’ll be making (sometime multiple) daily posts including bill summaries, commentary and floor action again this year. The Freedom Agenda Team will also be posting podcasts throughout the session with commentary on the day’s issues and happenings. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have this Legislative Session.

January 26th - 2013 Regular Legislative Session Day 13

I'm home for the weekend and can't wait to spend the day with Molly. I woke up this morning to a remarkable number of Robins in the pasture ... maybe a sign of an early spring, I sure hope so. I'll be speaking this morning at the statewide Republican Liberty Caucus event, along with Matt Shea and Jason Overstreet. We’re also all going to the Yakima County Cattlemen’s Annual Dinner tonight … I can’t wait to see everyone.

Here’s an article about the WA Firearms Freedom Act we introduced earlier this week. www.examiner.com/article/washington-state-prepares...-bill

I hope everyone has a great day.

Day January 19th - 2013 Regular Regular Lesgilative Session 6

The 2nd Amendment Rally was awesome and really well attended. Here's my speech ...

Good afternoon and welcome to your state capitol. Ladies and gentlemen, we are facing dark times and now is the time for each and every one of us to stand strong to uphold the Constitution of the United States. The tragedies in Colorado, Oregon and Connecticut, and make no mistake these were major tragedies, were perpetrated by bad people, bent on harming good people. Guns don’t harm people, people harm people and no amount of gun laws, gun bans or gun registration will ever stop individuals wishing to harm others. We cannot allow government to use these tragedies to infringe upon our 2nd Amendment rights to keep and bear arms.

In the Declaration of Independence, our Founding Fathers declared that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights. There are two very important points in the Declaration. First, our Founding Fathers acknowledged that these rights came from God, not the Government. Government did not grant these rights and they certainly cannot take them away.

Second, the Founders used the word"unalienable” which means, not to be separated, given away, or taken away. The right to keep and bear arms is not a suggestion. It is not qualified with"unless the government says otherwise.” It is very clear, we have the God given, unalienable right to keep and bear arms.

We have already seen actions that threaten our 2nd Amendment rights and in the coming days and weeks, we will see proposals at the National and State level that will continue the assault on these rights. We all must be ready and stand in support of our rights, we must educate our friends and neighbors when these threats arise and we all must be willing to speak loudly in defense of our rights.

In the next few days, we will be introducing legislation that protects our 2nd Amendment Rights. The Firearms Freedom Act includes a provision declaring"any federal law, rule, regulation, or order attempting to ban or register semi-automatic firearms or any firearm magazine unenforceable in Washington State.

Folks, join me today in telling the government this is our line in the sand and that we will not go quietly into the night.
Join me in telling the government"you will not tread on me.”

Thank you for spending your Saturday defending freedom. God Bless all of you, God Bless Washington State and God Bless America.
