Yesterday started out tough, but ended very, very well. Molly and I got a quote for our cabinets and countertops and the bid came in well below what we expected. We’re going to think about everything a couple more days and then pull the trigger on ordering everything. If all goes well, the remodel should be completed around July 20th ... give or take.
Tiffany starts her summer job next week at Fidelity Title Company. It’s going to be a great opportunity for her to learn a little responsibility and about other expectations on you as an employee. It will also give her some spending money which is a huge benefit to Molly and I. I’m really proud of her ... she’s becoming quite the lady.
Lastly, I’d ask everyone to please keep our farmers in your prayers. The cost of production is really high right now (fuel, fertilizer, etc.) and the weather has not been cooperating all that well. Last week’s rain doesn’t seem to have hurt the cherry crop, but more rain could impact the crop the closer we get to harvest. Many of the hay farmers around our place are still trying to get their hay dry after all the rain last week. We’ve had a little wind yesterday and this morning and that should help.

So far the weather has been holding and it looks like we may actually get our wet hay up without much further delay. It has been an incredible frustrating fall, but we'll make it through it. We spent most of last week building fence around our winter pasture. It's been slow going ... tearing out the old fence and putting in 5 new wires, but we're getting there.
We had a great opening weekend of duck season and the pups did a great job. This weekend ... not a single duck in the area. The irrigation canals were drained this week and I suspect the ducks are feeding in those instead of the ponds. The pups had a rough morning yesterday ... it's tough keeping two 5-1/2 old pups focused when they get bored from no ducks to retrieve.
I had the opportunity to speak at the Perry Tech graduation last week for the Electrical Technology and Instrumentation classes. What a great honor. I also got to tour the new Welding Lab area at Perry Tech ... very, very nice facility.
This week I'm headed over to Olympia on Thursday for a Caucus Retreat on Friday. I'll get to go to Cabela's too ... hehehehe, time for goodies.
My lovely, kind and extremely supportive wife's birthday is tomorrow ... she's turning 29 again! Make sure a wish her a Happy Birthday.
It's time to head out, fill water troughs and keep building fence. Have a great day and week everyone.

Duck season opened this weekend with a bang ... dang, I'm funny. At a little over 5 months old Ruger did better than I could have hoped. Blind retrieves, open water retrieves and open field retrieves and he sat quietly in the blind without trouble. His best retrieve came yesterday. We were packed up and sitting by the trucks with a small group of ducks landed back by the blind. We jumped them and put one down, but it landed about 150 yards away and across the canal ... YIKES! We had it marked, so we drove over and started looking for it. It was an open field next to a thick creek bottom and after about 10 minutes of not finding the duck Ruger started getting "birdy" and suddenly found the bird. What a great weekend with the pup.

Rain, rain go away and don't come back until my hay is done! Ugh, the weather is not cooperating and neither is the equipment. We bought a "new" used rake and are already having problems with it. Not good news with the rain we're getting. We still have about 40 acres down with another 20 still to cut. Stupid weather!
Molly and I went to Spokane Valley last weekend where I spoke at a private property rights seminar. The program focused on shoreline and critical area regulations and was really well done. A portion covered the science, another covered the legal issues and I covered policies and politics. The folks who attended asked great questions and are really well informed.
We've got a small load of heifers coming in this weekend and will be sending a load of fresh roping steers to the westside later this month. We've got about 50 acres we need to get fenced before winter gets here, but that should go fairly easily assuming we don't run into new and exciting problems. :-)
Waterfowl season is less then 2 weeks away and I can't wait to get Ruger out for the first time. He's still a little young for "big" water, but he's doing great and ready for short, shallow water hunts. Last night I worked him with a couple of scented dummies, hidden in thick grass. We walked around the pasture and when he caught scent, he quartered ground until he found the dummy. It was really cool to watch.
I only have a couple of meetings this week, bu next week is going to be a busy one. I have to go over to Olympia at least one day (maybe two) and have meetings the rest of the week. The Governor recently sent out an email letting the Legislature know she thinks we'll be looking at a $2 million budget problem in November, instead of the $1.3 billion announced a couple of weeks ago. Is waiting until November 28th for a Special Session worth an addition $700 million in deficits? I sure don't think so.

Where did the summer go? Seriously, it seems like I just returned home from a very, very long Legislative Session (ok, it was long ... 135 days long). We officially started 3rd cutting of hay this week for two of our "custom" customers. Our hay fields look to be a couple of weeks out, but we'll see. I'm thankful for mild weather this week and hope to get a lot done before the weekend.
Since school started on Monday, I decided it was time to get back into shape and started exercising again. I kept telling myself "round" is a shape, but the guy in the mirror didn't buy it.
I was reminded yesterday of yet another fee increase passed by the Democrat Majority last session. I stopped in and bought my Hunting License yesterday, which saved me from the increased fees that begin today. Sorry all you hunters, but if you haven't purchased your hunting license for 2011 yet it's going to cost you more.
The next couple of months look to be fairly busy for me. I have several committee meetings in Olympia and several meetings with constituents and constituent groups leading up to the committee meetings. Over the past couple of days I've received a bunch of information on tribal retrocession, which will keep me busy for a few days. I'm also participating in a property rights seminar in Spokane on October 1st related to critical areas and shoreline management. If you want more information on the meeting, let me know.

Second cutting of hay is finally in the books ... well, mostly. Everything is baled, but we need to finish picking it up tonight. We sent 16 tons to Prosser yesterday (loaded it and unloaded it), which made for a long day. At least it wasn't to hot.
I've been receiving a lot of inquiries into Coordination recently, which is great. When the people find out how powerful a tool it is to rein in state and federal agencies, everyone become interested in it. There will be another training session in Clarkston on September 18th. So the last few days have been really, really bad. We're trying to get the second cutting of hay done and things just seem to keep breaking down. First, we couldn't get a really thick grass/alfalfa field to dry out, then we couldn't get any dew on a different alfalfa field. Finally things looked good, but the parts we ordered for the rake we're the wrong ones (not our mistake though). We were able to borrow a rake for a day and things looked up again. We got our rake fixed with the right parts, only to have it brake down again ... this time badly. Spent Sunday working on the rake, got the bearings pulled and put into a different piece only to have the part break on the last bearing unit ... ugh! Finally after starting at 1:30 AM this morning, things looked good again. Only have about 13 rows left to bale in the alfalfa field and BOOM, the freaking front axle broke. Yup, broke! So instead of getting a little sleep today, I'll be back working on equipment. {sigh}
Not like things weren't bad enough, Saturday night Ruger's brother Remington (the new pups) was diagnosed with Parvo, so now we're on Parvo watch with all the dogs. Thankfully Remington is already back at home with the Beebe's, but I'm still worried about my little guy ... only time will tell.
The Moxee Hop Festival went really well. There were lot's of people and we had a good time (up until taking the dog to the emergency vet clinic at 7:00 PM Saturday night). I spent an hour in the dunk tank as a fundraiser for Wellness House and it sounds like they made a few hundred dollars over the course of the day.

Alright, so the second cutting of hay is not going well thus far. It started out good enough, but then the replacement tines we ordered came in and were the wrong ones. Luckily we were able to borrow a rake last night, but it's not working out real well for us. We'll try and get it set correctly tonight, but we're now another day behind. Ugh!
Molly and I went to Stephanie and Ryan's wedding on Sunday at Crystal Mountain. For those who don't know, Stephanie is my Legislative Assistant. We had a great time and got to meet Ryan and Stephanie's families. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Woodard!
The Moxee Hop Festival is this weekend, which is always a good time. I'll be in the dunk tank on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Molly is selling tickets so come on out and dunk your local legislator.

Another day of crazy weather here in the Moxee Valley ... rain, followed by wind, yuck! Last Saturday I participated in the Sort for a Cure event in Sunnyside. It was my first try at Ranch Sorting, but I had a great time and didn't take last place (actually 11th out of 18 teams). I was going to ride Chili, but she somehow got a cut on her head and it was swelled up. I ended up riding Icicle and she wasn't all that impressed with the other horses or people. She settled in and did just fine the second go though.
We put down 20 acres of hay on Friday and it was about ready to bale, until today's rain that is. The wind is helping out and we were able to get started raking it tonight. It's a little discolored, but I think it'll be alright.
So yesterday was the first meeting of the Joint Executive-Legislative Workgroup on Tribal Retrocession and I found out that I'm either the co-chair or vice-chair (I was called both). That's fairly interesting since I wasn't asked my thoughts on the agenda or schedule for the rest of the year. Oh well. The meeting was actually pretty informative and I've got all sorts of new ideas for legislation.
We're going to go to Mossy Rock this weekend to see our good friend Tim Kunka, ride horses and chase calves. I'm really looking forward to it. Tim trains horses and does a really good job with them. We took him 19 calves a couple of weeks ago, so now he's also holding some sorting events at his place too. If you need a horse trained, Tim is the guy to do it.

After a couple of weeks of playing nonstop catch-up, we finally got caught up! Now we'll try and stay one step ahead ... ha ha ha. We'll see how that goes. Looks like we're going to work cows this weekend and get a bunch shipped to the Sunnyside pasture. We're down to one last hay field to rake and bale, so it'll be time to clean up and do some maintenance on the equipment.
I received word that I was appointed to the Joint Executive-Legislative Workgroup on Tribal Retrocession. Various tribes want the state to pass civil and criminal retrocession legislation, which we argued against last session. It should be an interesting workgroup.

We finally have all the hay baled and started picking it up last night. We baled 1754 bales on Tuesday and Wednesday ... right around 70 tons of hay, so we're off to a good start. I'm looking forward to not having to sit in a tractor for a couple of days. We've got to sort calves later today to send out tomorrow morning to Tenino for roping. We're working with Bret Hale, owner of the Stick Horse Ranch.
Brock had a game in Selah last night and they won. He has a double header on Sunday here in Moxee against Walla Walla.
The Revenue Forecast will be released later today. Any bets on how much lower it's going to be? We've heard all kinds of speculation, but my bet is that it will be $150 million less than originally projected. If it's any higher than that, things could get even more interesting. There is a rumor that Governor Gregoire decided not to seek a third term because the revenue forecast is going to be really bad ... guess we'll see.

We're still in the middle of getting the first cutting of hay all done. The rain and my jury duty relly cost us some time last week and this week doesn't appear to be much better. With luck, we'll have most of the hay raked this morning and will finish bailing sometime tomorrow morning.
Brock's here for the summer and played in his first summer baseball games yesterday. He's playing for one the East Valley Redhawks 14U teams this year. He seemed to enjoy it and it'll give him something to do for part of the summer.

Oh the agony ... why must it rain each and every year during the first cutting of hay? We checked the fields last night and, with the wind and warm temperatures, everything was close to being ready to bail. Now, who knows. This is really going to be a frustrating day!
Tonight the Washington State Redistricting Commission is holding a public meeting to accept comments on the proposed Legislative and Congressional District boundary changes. The meeting is at the Clarion Hotel, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Based on yesterday's article in the Yakima Herald (see www.yakima-herald.com/stories/2011/06/06/groups-se...ounty) Nd the online comments, tonight's meeting could be interesting.
Well, I'm getting ready to head into town to pick up parts for the rake and tractor. Wish me luck getting everything fixed and, more importantly, that the rain will end soon.

We started getting hay cut Saturday morning and were able to get about 70 acres done by Sunday night. Unfortunately, like most first cuttings we've had a few minor problems with the swather which cost us a couple fo hours both days with down time. We should be all finished cutting by tonight. Now we need to start getting the baler, rake and small tractor ready to get everything finished. The Special Session really hurt us getting everything ready to go, but we'll get there.
We had a BBQ at Molly's family's house last night for Her brother Peter who's back from Afghanistan. Welcome home Peter and thank you for what you do for our country ... God Bless.
It should be a fairly busy week of still trying to get caught up ... my goal is to finally be caught up in time to go back to Olympia next January. :-) Until the next time ...

Today is Tiffany's birthday ... 15 years old and ready to take on the world or so she thinks. I hope to help her have a great day. Looks like we'll be cutting hay today and over the weekend. We have about ten good days, before the possibility of rain again. I hope to have Molly's chicken coop done today too, so I can start on all my other projects.
Doing a few follow-ups on some issues now that the session is over. It's time to have a little fun with the agencies. Hehehehe ....

2011 Legislative Special Session
Day 7 - Back in the saddle again ... Olympia that is. We were called back for what was to be 4 days of work, but then we found out we'd only be considering 11 bills today and the Ways and Means Committee would be meeting on Thursday. Great use of time by the Democrat Majority ... seriously, 3 hour drive to consider 11 bills. A great use of taxpayers money. I have an idea, the next time we're called back I'll bring one of our bulls with me and release it on the Capital Campus ... I'll pick him up when you let use leave for good. Hehehe ...
I spent the last week trying to get caught up around the house. I finally got the irrigation fixed and turned on for a full 2 days before having to turn it back off to head back to Olympia. Now I'm only 29 days behind schedule. We went out and got a load of hay a week ago, only to get within about a mile from home when the truck caught fire. After getting the fire put out and saving the truck, the hay and the trailer I thought to myself, "well that was fun!"
We supplied calves to the Shootout roping in Ellensburg on Saturday. Based on the feedback from the ropers, the calves ran great and everyone was happy. It could be a big deal for us and might lead to supplying calves to a few more ropings in the future. The calves all came back looking good and were turned back onto the calves on Sunday.
It is quite frustrating to be back in Olympia for a total of 11 bills. The Democrat Majority doesn't need our votes to pass anything, yet they can't get their crap together to actually get anything done. Oh well, things will be different in 2012 when we are back in control.

It's a beautiful morning here in the Moxee Valley. We had a very long, extended weekend, but we accomplished a lot. We had two parades, finished all of our 2nd cutting of hay, delivered cows and bulls to a rodeo, weaned calves, and fixed a lot of fence.
