I spent another weekend in Olympia and haven’t seen God’s Country since January 6th. Tiffany’s volleyball team played in Seattle on Sunday and by the sounds of it, the girls played very well. They ended up taking second in the flight, which means they’ll be moving up to a new flight for the next tournament. Tiffany called me yesterday between games and told me she was playing like a"beast” ... I’m so proud of her!
I’ve got a couple of easy days this week, followed by endless Floor action at the end of the week. We’re scheduled to be on the House Floor Saturday and possibly Sunday too, so it could be a long week. There are a bunch of Republican ladies in town today and I’m going to go over to their function at noon. The Cattlemen are in town today also and the Farm Bureau are in town tomorrow ... it’s always good to see folks from home.
We’ve got calves hitting the ground everyday right now and I can’t wait to finally get home to see all of them. I’m going to have a lot of work to do this spring, but I can’t wait to get started.

With the Christmas holiday finally in the rear-view mirror, it's time to focus on the road ahead for 2012. Boy oh boy, where to begin? Robert and I are working hard to get an arena secured in order to put on a practice series for calf roping, team roping, break away, and barrel racing. We think we have one secured, but need to get it finalized as soon as possible. This could be a really great opportunity to showcase our cattle with the local ropers.
We had our first 2011-12 calf last week. A really nice little bull calf that's doing really well. We should start seeing new calves daily sometime next week. I'm really looking forward to it. We've got our 2 and half year old stud colt (soon to be a gelding) over with Tim Kunka right now. Tim's been doing a great job with Buck. Only about 9 days left until I head back over to Olympia for the 2012 Regular Session. After 3 years over there, I've learned that keeping a positive attitude can be very difficult. Fortunately, I've got some really great friends who (attempt to) keep me grounded and focused. If you don't know Charles Ross, you should! He's got the quickest (and sometimes harshest) one-liners around, like an old school gun fighter with words.
Matt Shea is another guy worth meeting. When it comes to Constitutional law and principles there's no one better, but he's also a guy you can trust to always have your back. Then there's Jason Overstreet (aka The Rooster) ... wow, where to begin? Jason is someone you simply must meet. Very principled, very conservative and not afraid to give his opinion to anyone. Jason is someone who always reminds me why we do what we do.
Now I've know Joel Kretz for a few years and can tell you stories ... wow. Joel is probably the only person in Olympia who knows exactly how to "communicate" with me and it usually involves him telling me to calm down about whatever it is that has me all wrapped around the axle. He's a great friend.
Finally, Richard DeBolt, our leader and Grand Poobah, is probably the toughest person to describe to anyone who doesn't know him. Rich has a great sense of humor and is one of the smartest people I know. When I met Rich for the first time he reminded me of Adam Sandler ... enough said.
I rely on the guys a lot in Olympia and trust them implicitly. I know I don't thank them enough for all they do and I hope they know I would go to war with them any day.

Another day of crazy weather here in the Moxee Valley ... rain, followed by wind, yuck! Last Saturday I participated in the Sort for a Cure event in Sunnyside. It was my first try at Ranch Sorting, but I had a great time and didn't take last place (actually 11th out of 18 teams). I was going to ride Chili, but she somehow got a cut on her head and it was swelled up. I ended up riding Icicle and she wasn't all that impressed with the other horses or people. She settled in and did just fine the second go though.
We put down 20 acres of hay on Friday and it was about ready to bale, until today's rain that is. The wind is helping out and we were able to get started raking it tonight. It's a little discolored, but I think it'll be alright.
So yesterday was the first meeting of the Joint Executive-Legislative Workgroup on Tribal Retrocession and I found out that I'm either the co-chair or vice-chair (I was called both). That's fairly interesting since I wasn't asked my thoughts on the agenda or schedule for the rest of the year. Oh well. The meeting was actually pretty informative and I've got all sorts of new ideas for legislation.
We're going to go to Mossy Rock this weekend to see our good friend Tim Kunka, ride horses and chase calves. I'm really looking forward to it. Tim trains horses and does a really good job with them. We took him 19 calves a couple of weeks ago, so now he's also holding some sorting events at his place too. If you need a horse trained, Tim is the guy to do it.

We finally have all the hay baled and started picking it up last night. We baled 1754 bales on Tuesday and Wednesday ... right around 70 tons of hay, so we're off to a good start. I'm looking forward to not having to sit in a tractor for a couple of days. We've got to sort calves later today to send out tomorrow morning to Tenino for roping. We're working with Bret Hale, owner of the Stick Horse Ranch.
Brock had a game in Selah last night and they won. He has a double header on Sunday here in Moxee against Walla Walla.
The Revenue Forecast will be released later today. Any bets on how much lower it's going to be? We've heard all kinds of speculation, but my bet is that it will be $150 million less than originally projected. If it's any higher than that, things could get even more interesting. There is a rumor that Governor Gregoire decided not to seek a third term because the revenue forecast is going to be really bad ... guess we'll see.

2011 First Special Legislative Session
Day 22 - We're back in Olympia for what might be just for the day and evening, followed by being called back on Friday. Another ridiculous day with only 11 bills on the calendar ... great use of time and taxpayers money. It'll be interesting to see what exactly the Democrat Majority has in store for us today. My prediction, we'll run 6 or 7 bills and be done. We just finished Caucusing on four bills, three of which aren't even on the House Floor Calendar. We also heard that we will not be called back until next Tuesday. Second Special Session anyone?
I think I'm due for a long weekend ... Maybe a good time to head out on horseback or go fishing, something other than thinking about Olympia. We discussed taking a short cutting of hay in a couple of weeks, assuming the weather gets better, to try and get a fourth cutting this year. We'll have to wait and see what the forecast looks like.

2011 Legislative Special Session
Day 7 - Back in the saddle again ... Olympia that is. We were called back for what was to be 4 days of work, but then we found out we'd only be considering 11 bills today and the Ways and Means Committee would be meeting on Thursday. Great use of time by the Democrat Majority ... seriously, 3 hour drive to consider 11 bills. A great use of taxpayers money. I have an idea, the next time we're called back I'll bring one of our bulls with me and release it on the Capital Campus ... I'll pick him up when you let use leave for good. Hehehe ...
I spent the last week trying to get caught up around the house. I finally got the irrigation fixed and turned on for a full 2 days before having to turn it back off to head back to Olympia. Now I'm only 29 days behind schedule. We went out and got a load of hay a week ago, only to get within about a mile from home when the truck caught fire. After getting the fire put out and saving the truck, the hay and the trailer I thought to myself, "well that was fun!"
We supplied calves to the Shootout roping in Ellensburg on Saturday. Based on the feedback from the ropers, the calves ran great and everyone was happy. It could be a big deal for us and might lead to supplying calves to a few more ropings in the future. The calves all came back looking good and were turned back onto the calves on Sunday.
It is quite frustrating to be back in Olympia for a total of 11 bills. The Democrat Majority doesn't need our votes to pass anything, yet they can't get their crap together to actually get anything done. Oh well, things will be different in 2012 when we are back in control.
