Two weeks from tomorrow, I head back to Olympia for the 2012 Regular Session. From what we're hearing, the $500 million sales tax increase may still be sitting on the horizon and there may be a proposed $1.0 billion property tax increase. Remember what Albert Einstein said? "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." It would appear the Democrat Majority doesn't remember?

The rest of the week will be fairly slow going, which I'm thankful for. We still need to mend a fence the US Army won't fix and may get that done Friday or Saturday. Otherwise, it's feeding cattle and horses and relaxing just a little bit. We're headed to Ellensburg on Sunday for Christmas with my family and then I'm taking Brock home on Monday. I've got a couple of meeting in Olympia on Tuesday and then back to Moxee for the remainder of the year.

The weather finally cleared up and now it's just cold. The yearlings are doing fantastic and having some great horn growth right now. We ended up separating the calf pen into three separate pens to keep the smallest ones healthy ... best thing we've done for far this winter. This years filly is getting really big. She's got great confirmation, now we just need her to finish coloring out.

Headed to town in a bit to pick up pigs at the butcher, go to the bank, get propane, and finish Christmas shopping. I'm pretty proud of myself for getting my shopping done before the 24th.

The 2nd Special Session of 2011 ended last Wednesday with a thud. It's amazing that with 2 months notice (the Governor announce on September 22nd that she'd be calling us back to Special Session) and almost three weeks in Olympia more couldn't be done. Frustrating!

Things have been plenty busy at home. We've had a nasty inversion for the past few weeks that's keeping temperatures cold and damp. The cattle seem to be doing fine, but we're watching the yearlings closely for any sickness. We've had to doctor a couple over the past few days, but so far things are going well.

Christmas is just around the corner and I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. 2011 was a good year, but let's all hope 2012 is a great one. God Bless.

2011 2nd Special Legislative Session Day 3

Aother day and another day of nothing. It feels like we never left this place. Mostly just sitting around waiting for the Democrat Majority to do something. I had my first committee meeting today and learned all the things the state is doing for economic development. Interestingly, no one actually discussed all the roadblocks the state has created which hurt economic development.

I'm really looking forward to the National Finals Rodeo kicking off tomorrow night. Hopefully someplace in Olympia will actually broadcast it.

Back home, we've been waiting for the Army to fix their fence. I got word yesterday that they are finally getting it done ... Yeah! As soon as it's fixed the rest of the cows get to come home.

Well the winter storm warning for the Cascades was right on the money. We had a little trouble getting a load of cattle and a horse over White Pass night and had to drive up there at about 9:00 PM to get the rig of the hill. Fun times had by all. Thankfully everyone and everything got home just fine. I finally got home around 12:30 AM.

Back to building fence today.

After a couple of weeks of playing nonstop catch-up, we finally got caught up! Now we'll try and stay one step ahead ... ha ha ha. We'll see how that goes. Looks like we're going to work cows this weekend and get a bunch shipped to the Sunnyside pasture. We're down to one last hay field to rake and bale, so it'll be time to clean up and do some maintenance on the equipment.

I received word that I was appointed to the Joint Executive-Legislative Workgroup on Tribal Retrocession. Various tribes want the state to pass civil and criminal retrocession legislation, which we argued against last session. It should be an interesting workgroup.

Off to feed the critters, move irrigation and head to town. Have a great day all.

2011 Legislative Session

Days 97 through 99 - Back in Olympia today after spending the weekend home seeing the family and working cattle. The Hinder concert on Friday was a lot of fun. I had a great time with great friends. Headed home Saturday and worked cattle all afternoon, while Molly went to Granger to watch the nieces and nephews. Worked cattle again on Sunday and took the beef cattle to a pasture in Selah. Got to spend the evening with Molly and Tiffany and then drove back to Olympia this morning.

We had a Labor and Workforce Development Committee meeting at noon and are now sitting on the House Floor waiting for the Democrat Majority to decide what they want to do for the rest of the day. As of this morning, it sounds like we'll have Sine Die on Friday around noon, followed by Special Session starting on Monday. Of course all of that is subject to change. Fun times had by all.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 80 - There's still very little happening in Olympia. We found out today that we will not be working on Saturday, which means I get to come home for the weekend. We've been able to pick up a few head of cattle over the past few weeks, leased out a few calves and trippers for a few weeks and traded for a new bull. We even picked up a new pasture foe the year. At least there's something going on at home. Some of the mares should be getting close to foaling in the next month or so, too.
