Less Government, Lower Taxes and More Freedom - 2014 Legislative Session Day 1

The 2014 Legislative Session has officially began and the first bill considered this session was Engrossed Substitute House Bill 1817 ... the Washington State Dream Act. This bill was pulled to the Floor for consideration without any hearing, debate or public discussion in this year's session. The bill passed 70 to 23 with 2 Excused from voting.

The 2014 Legislative Session begins today at noon, but we have a Caucus meeting at 10:00 AM to discuss issues we anticipate being big this session. I've got two committee hearings this afternoon and will be posting bill numbers and summaries again this year.

2011 Legislative Session

Day 54 continued - Well we're still on the House Floor. We are kicking the holy heck out of all the Democrat Majority's really bad bills, like extending the stadium tax to fund an art project in Seattle. If we run all the bills the Democrats want to run we'll be here until sometime early Saturday morning, only to come back in Saturday morning for another Floor Session at 10:00 AM. Here's the really crappy part ... Molly decided to surprise me tonight and drove over for the night. Looks like I might get to see her for about 8 hours. Paybacks a bitch ............

2011 Legislative Session

Day 52 - I am officially getting sick, which explains my mood yesterday. I really want to thank all the encouraging words everyone sent yesterday ... I can't tell you how much it helps pick me up out of a funk. We've been working since 10:00 AM, except for a 45 minute lunch, and have debated and passed 8 total bills. Time management is not the Democrat majority's strong point.

It sounds like I get to take on Futurewise and a State Agency today .... I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

Washington State is at a cross-roads and it is this election that will define our future. For the last six years, the State General Fund Budget has grown by over 26% even through the hard economic times we’re facing. It’s time we send a message to Olympia; the era of big government is over. It’s time that a new transparent and accountable government lead Washington State out of this recession.

Folks, Washington State simply cannot tax, spend or borrow its way out of a $5.0 billion deficit. We need to fundamentally change the way government operates, increase local control over decisions that lead to economic gain, remove the bureaucratic roadblocks State government consistency places in front of its citizens, and return to the “Priorities of Government”.

The Washington State Constitution is very explicit in declaring what government is mandated to do. Protect public health and safety (including the most vulnerable in our society), provide for the education of all children and provide infrastructure. These should be the “Priorities of Government” and these are the areas in which the Legislature must focus its attention.

Next, we must pass sound economic policies which promote free enterprise, privatization of government programs where feasible, reform the onerous regulation on our businesses, and provide the tax incentives necessary to promote expansion of existing businesses.

Finally, we must expand local control to provide local governments with the tools they need to recruit new businesses to Washington State. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, “the government closest to the people, governs best.” We must allow our locally elected officials (City Councils and County Commissioners) the power to meet the needs of the people they serve. We must remove bureaucratic oversight from their decisions and, in doing so, return the power to the electorate.

This election will define our future and I ask for your support this November.

Finally a little quiet time. We had a very busy weekend filled with a whole lot of friends and family in and out of the house all weekend. Our good friend Tim Kunka, came over Friday night after interviewing for a Range Management job in Ellensburg. My mother in law also came in from southeastern Oregon Friday night for the weekend.

Brock and I went down to the Grand Ol Picnic in Underwood yesterday ... it was great. We got to see a lot of wonderful people and I gave an old fashion stump speech (actually standing on a tree stump). It was a lot of fun.

It's another busy day here in the Moxee Valley. Our first load of calves are headed to the sale this morning ... let's hope the price stays good. I'm playing in the Yakima Association of Realtors golf tournament today, which is always a great time. We might go up to Ellensburg tomorrow night for the high school football game against East Valley, but still haven't decided for certain. Saturday we're in Bingen for the Huckleberry Festival Parade and I'll be in the Sheriff's Dunk Tank from 12:30 to 1:00 PM to help raise money for the help raise money for their Toys for Tots program. Sunday we'll be in Dallesport for the TEA Party from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.
