2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 26

Back on the House Floor this morning for a fun filled day of ... waiting! We’re taking bets on whether we’ll work tomorrow or not. The Senate doesn’t seem to think so, but the Senate Ways and Means Committee is meeting this afternoon to consider legislation and that could lead to working tomorrow. All that being said, the rumor is we will be sent home around 1:00 PM for the weekend. We will be back on Monday for additional"work”, with the cutoff being Tuesday at midnight.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 25 continued ...

It's 4:30 PM and we just started debat of the fourth bill of the day, the Supplemental Operating Budget. A great use of 6.5 hours today, in fact we just got done sitting around waiting for the Democrat Majority for the last 2 plus house. At this rate we should be done by August.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 25

I’m back in Olympia and, after hearing a single bill in committee yesterday, we have yet to do anything today. We have been given a run list of three bills to do after 1:00 PM today. Folks, this is nothing but a bunch of posturing by the Democrat Majority to create the allusion that we’re actually doing something to address the budget deficit. Fact, we are doing nothing substantive to address the long-term sustainability of the budget ... NOTHING! The ‘”reforms” being touted by the Democrats are not true reforms and have not been agreed to by anyone.

The Floor Calendar has several bills that are not remotely related to budget issues. Look at HB 2821 which bans a chemical that has no proven link to children’s health or HB 2830 which creates collective bargaining rights for interpreters. There is no reason we should be discussing these issues during a Special Session.

As most we recall, we were in Special Session in December to specifically deal with the budget and then work on bills that would create jobs in Washington State. Instead, we spent the first 30-days dealing with social issues and the last 30 dealing with the budget yet again. Ugh, frustrating is an understatement.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 24

Well I'm back in Olympia and I'm sitting in the General Government Appropriations and Oversight Committee hearing HB 2821 concerning children’s safe products. Don’t be confused by the bill title, this bill has virtually nothing to do with children’s safe products and everything to do with limiting a person’s right to purchase a product that contains a certain flame retardant chemical. This is the only bill the Committee will hear today and is nearly identical to a bill that was considered earlier this session. The real question is why did the Democrat Majority decide to drop another bill that was virtually the same as one previously considered? Could it be an attempt to fool the public into believing we’re actually doing something during the Special Session? Folks, don’t be fooled. There’s nothing worthwhile actually happening in Olympia right now.

We were told we will be working Thursday, Friday and likely Saturday. The Special Session is required to end next Tuesday at midnight ... it sure looks like we’re headed to a Second Special Session.

2012 First Special Session Day 22 Continued

Here’s the latest from Olympia ... I got called back to Olympia Wednesday for a Caucus at 9:00 AM and a General Government Appropriations and Oversight Committee meeting at 10:30 AM to hear one bill. Yup that’s right, one bill and one bill only. What an incredible waste of time and taxpayer money. It sounds like we’ll be on the House Floor Thursday and maybe Friday to run a bunch of bills that aren’t agreed to and likely will not even come up for a vote in the Senate.

Second Special Session, here we come. By the way, this Special Session is actually the 4th for the biennium.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 22

We just received word that we will be back in session on Wednesday this week. We have no idea how long we’ll be in Olympia, but with luck things will go quickly. I’m ready for the session to be done and the opportunity to finally get things started at home. Until we know more, here’s a nice little quote from one of our Founding Fathers ...
