Less Government, Lower Taxes and More Freedom - 2014 Legislative Session Day 17

Today, in the Government Operations and Elections Committee, we’re hearing testimony on three bills and may take Executive Action on five. House Bill 2119 designates Palouse Falls as the official state waterfall.

House Bill 2387 designates the Ostrea lurida as the official oyster of the state of Washington.

House Bill 2622 designates the Central Washington State Fair as the official state fair.

The five bills that may receive Executive Action include House Bills 2248, 2376, 2202, 2119, and 2387.

What a weekend! Molly and I had the opportunity to participate in the Love and Respect Conference in Richland over the weekend. It was a fantastic program and I would recommend it to anyone. Dr. Eggerich is a great presenter and the material is incredibly useful. We drove up to Spokane Saturday afternoon for Tiffany’s last volleyball tournament of 2012 club ball. While the tournament itself wasn’t all that great (the girls didn’t play that well) the trip itself was good. It was really nice just getting away for a couple of days with Molly.

I saw an article last week about how some economists think Washington could face a $1.7 billion budget shortfall next biennium. I’m not sure how to describe how frustrating that is to hear. We spent an entire Special Session"negotiating” a budget that left a budget reserve of approximately $340 million ... an amount that pays for less than 8 days of operation ... and now we could face another $1.7 billion deficit? At some point the Legislator’s need to let go of their"pet projects” and start prioritizing where we spend YOUR money.

2012 First Special Legislative Session Day 26

Back on the House Floor this morning for a fun filled day of ... waiting! We’re taking bets on whether we’ll work tomorrow or not. The Senate doesn’t seem to think so, but the Senate Ways and Means Committee is meeting this afternoon to consider legislation and that could lead to working tomorrow. All that being said, the rumor is we will be sent home around 1:00 PM for the weekend. We will be back on Monday for additional"work”, with the cutoff being Tuesday at midnight.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 19

It's Friday baby! I'm in the Labor and Workforce Development Committee this morning listening to testimony on HB 2348 related to the Workforce Investment Act and HB 2265 establishing Washington Works payments to increase graduation rates. HB 2265 will only cost the taxpayers $140 million per biennium.

Last night the State Government and Tribal Affairs Committee met at 6:30 PM to take Executive Action on 10 bills. We made a procedural motion to put the Regulatory Freedom and Accountability Act on the Executive Session calendar, but the motion failed. So much for the Denorcrat Majority wanting to deal with systemic problems with over regulation. We'll keep working on it for the next few days.

Last night the House Republican Organizational Committee met at AWB to elect 3 members to the Board of Directors. I was officially elected as the Eastern Washington representative to the HROC Board of Directors. With 8 seats, we take the majority ... Time to get to work, as soon as session ends.
