After nine straight hours on the House Floor yesterday and another 4 straight hours today, I think it’s fair to say"the grind has officially began.” We’ve run 14 bills so far today and will have debate on final passage of the Supplemental Budget at some point tonight.

2012 Regular Legislative Session
Well I woke up to snow in Olympia. Nothing was actually sticking to the ground, but there was some B-I-G HUGE flakes falling. We start on the House Floor at 1:30 today with a fairly large run list and then starting the debate on final passage of the Supplemental Budget around 6:00 PM.
We debated 12 amendments to the proposed budget for about four hours yesterday, so today’s debate will be on final passage. I took the lead in debating two of the amendments, the first related to restoring $5.2 million to Growth Management grants and shoreline assistance, restoring cuts to DOE management staff and water quality financial assistance program and restoring cuts to salmon grants. Yet again, the Democrat majority is choosing to fund fish and the environment of people.
The second amendment dealt with adding $23,000 to the Office of Regulatory Assistance to create a small business liaison team to assist small businesses in permitting and regulatory issues. I pointed out that the Republicans put forth a significant regulatory reform package that should have had the opportunity to be debated on the House Floor, but the Democrats aren’t interested in regulatory reform, just more taxes. The fact that the Democrat Majority believes the state needs a small business liaison team is very telling. I have an idea, how we just make permits easier to get and understand?
We also ran four amendments to show Republicans believe we should be prioritizing our spending to focus on the core functions of government ... that is to fund education first, protect public health and safety and to protect the most vulnerable in our society. Of course the Democrats turned down all but one of our amendments.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 51 continued
The Democrat Majority in Olympia still believe the state needs more revenue. HB 2563 would establish a capital gains tax to the tune of $6.5 billion. HB 2762 would repeal joint legislative audit and review committee tax preferences, sales and use tax exemptions, and business and occupation tax exemptions, credits, deductions, and preferential tax rates to the tune of $3.7 billion. Wow $10.2 billion in new tax revenue! Really? Please let Olympia know it’s time to live within its means.

So how do you know when the end of session is near? The introduction of Title only bills. Yes that’s right, one of the favorites of the Democrat Majority is to introduce a bill titled something like ... An Act related to increasing state revenue ... and that is the extent of the bill. Look at HB 2809 and 2810 to see two great examples.
Based on the schedule for this week, I think it’s safe to say the grind is about to begin. This is the time of session when we sit around and do a whole lot of waiting on the Democrats to count votes, trade votes and otherwise spin in circles trying to figure out what they want to do next. If it wasn’t so dang frustrating it would be entertaining.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 50
I had a fairly good weekend in Olympia. I started reading The Love Dare and The Resolution on Sunday, both are great books thus far and a real eye opener for my many short-comings. I went and watched Act of Valor last night ... holy cow, great movie. God bless the men and women protecting this great Nation.
We’re on the House Floor this afternoon. We don’t have any indication on how late we’re going to go tonight, so it could be a very long day. Stay tuned.

2012 Regular Legislative Session Day 47
My day started out nicely ... I had the opportunity to meet Newt Gingrich. He gave a fantastic talk to the House Republican Caucus about creating jobs, lowering gas prices, and reforming the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. He also discussed getting a Republican majority in the House this election, based on the 1994 Republican Revolution. He even gave us a couple of talking points that fit well within out messaging.
